Chris and Carmen were able to return to the U.S. with solutions, and begin to implement them while I was still in Morocco. They recorded them and sent the video to me . I then returned to the group or person who offered the suggestion to show them their solution in action. They were clearly touched that their ideas made such an immediate impact.
The first was Adil, our donkey handler. He had suggested that if we wanted to understand how Morocco could solve many of our problems, we should read the Quran. He had a poetic response to seeing Carmen’s family reading and talking about the Quran:
“When one is trying to please their nose they choose a nice fragrance, for eyes they search for something beautiful, for ears – good music and for the tongue something sweet. But for the heart? Well, this fills my heart.”
The next solution came from Samya. When I showed her the footage from her solution to think and talk about revoltion everydayshe took a slight issue with the way Chris had interpreted her solution. We discussed the nuances for nearly 30 minutes! It struck me how seriously she took it and how invested she was in getting it right. The video gave the conversation more weight and a sense of immediacy. As a result we began to start all our discussions/meetings with a showing of the video.
