The Problems of Karlsruhe (ZKM)
Problems collected for an upcoming show at ZKM Contemporary Art Museum in Karlsruhe, Germany. These problems are going to be solved by think tanks in Ghana, Cuba, Mexico, Serbia, Cambodia, and Iran, among others…
1. The Theatre here shows crap. They don’t do anything for today… just for old people. (video)
2. The whole city feels like hyper-secure and super-boring. (video)
3. I think the problem in Karlsruhe is the housing shortage not only for artists but also for students. And I wish to get a housing solution for these people who are coming here to Karlsruhe to do their studies and work here. (video)
4. I think that the State Theater (Badisches Staatsteheater) in Karlsruhe is absolutely hideous/ ugly/ nasty. (video)
5. What I don’t like in Karlsruhe is that as a biker you are unprotected. That should be changed. The car drivers are (as you can see here (pointing to the Hollein car-sculpture in front of the ZKM-cube)) much too prominent here – and the bikers have no chance to survive. (video)
6. My problem with Karlsruhe is that the river doesn’t run through the city. Different as in other cities the Rhine is far out – you nearly can’t make it there after quitting time. There is no infrastructure, no kiosks, no hangouts, no beer AND you are prickled by the mosquitos. To mention only a few of the problems the location of the Rhine far outside of the city entails. (video)
7. What disturbs me is the topography of Karlsruhe – the platitude of the Rheinplain. I would like to have more height difference to overcome and maybe as well a more diverse nature. In the city itself, the botanic diversity is as well to small for me. I am from Kassel, and there is a much bigger botanic diversity, which I miss here. (video)
